BOOK CHAPTER. 2003. p.145-162. Interpretive Summary: BOOK CHAPTER, TECHNICAL ABSTRACT ONLY Technical Abstract: This chapter illustrates aspects of the symbiotic relationship between the microsporidia and their hosts. Most examples are drawn from relationships involving invertebrate hosts, with additional material taken from those that infect vertebrates. A substantial proportion of our knowledge on the basic biology and ecology of the microsporidia is based on studies related to their potential for controlling insects of either a medical or an economic importance. However, much of what is known at the molecular level has been derived from studies on the microsporidia, which have been found to be important opportunist pathogens of immuno-compromised humans. |
