Mississippi Valley Uniform Regional Barley Nursery Report. Interpretive Summary: Same as technical abstract Technical Abstract: Nine locations contributed useable data for this year's report. The Busch Agricultural Resources site was grown in both Bottineau and Williston rather than Minot DN (last year's site). Planting of nurseries at Saskatoon, Brandon, and Winnipeg continued. Data from Mead (Nebraska) and Caro (Michigan) were not submitted. All other data were used. Because of difficulties in obtaining reliable data from the Langdon site in recent years, the Langdon nursery was moved about 12 miles east near the town of Osnabrock, ND. This is the third year that the nursery has been grown near Osnabrock. The nurseries at Nebraska and South Dakota will be discontinued next year. Average planting date was May 4th, slightly later than the 30-year average and 8 days later than last year. Average heading date was July 2nd, nine days later that the 30-year average. Average yield (4402 kg/ha or 81.8 bu/a) was about 7% higher than last year. Entries with best yields were M110, M108, BT484, M109, and Drummond. Only two stations reported test weight; the average of 65.4 kg/hl was considerably higher than that of last year. However, last year's average test weight was the poorest since 1991 and ranked last over the past thirty years. The greatest test weights were recorded for 6B97-2195, MNBrite, 6B97-2245, 6B95-2482, and M109. Lodging data were reported from only two locations, Crookston and Brandon. Very little lodging was observed at Crookston, possibly masking differences among the entries. The five entries with the least lodging were Drummond, Stander, ND16301, M109, and M106. Average plant height was 81.6 cm. Shortest entries were M110, M106, M109, 6B95-2482, and 6B97-2245. Kernel plumpness data were reported only from Bottineau and Kermen. An estimation of Fusarium head blight severity was made at the Carrington and Osnabrock locations. |
