Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Nutshells from five different sources (almond, black walnut, English walnut macadamia nut, pecan) were converted to granular activated carbons (GACs) b carbon dioxide activation. A portion of the GACs were exposed to compresse air and the physical (yield, surface area, attrition), chemical (pH, surfac charge) and adsorptive (organics uptake, metal ion uptake) properties of bo ooxidized and non-oxidized carbons were determined. The source material appeared to affect all three groups of properties for both oxidized and non oxidized carbons with major differences observed between almond shells and other four nutshells. Differences in organics uptake, especially of polar compounds, were also found between GACs made from almond shells, the group consisting of black walnut shells, English walnut shells and pecan shells, macadamia nutshells. Oxidation had its greatest effects on pH, surface cha and uptake of metal ions. The changes due to oxidation were found to be independent of carbon source material.
