Research Project: Role of Livestock Pests in Transmission of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza

Location: Arthropod-borne Animal Diseases Research

Project Number: 3020-32000-020-008-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2026
End Date: Dec 31, 2027

Objective:
Assess role of livestock pests in the carriage and transmission of Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI)

Approach:
Insects will be collected from positive livestock premises and surveyed for H5N1 HPAI virus via qRT-PCR. Based on these findings, bioassays aimed at determining transmission dynamics by incriminated insect species will be performed. This will include infecting insects with a low pathogenic strain of the virus and determining survival, persistence and transmission to other substrates.
