Location: Potato, Pulse and Small Grains Quality Research
Project Number: 3060-21430-009-028-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 1, 2025
End Date: Aug 31, 2027
Objective:
The objectives of this project are to: 1) develop an emulsion containing zinc nanoparticles for thermal fog applications to inhibit sprouting in potatoes; 2) compare the CIPC application with the emulsion containing zinc nanoparticles; 3) understand the physiological, morphological and biochemical changes in tuber tissues after the treatments.
Approach:
Experiments will be conducted in a multi-institutional research setting, and the cooperator will carry out the following: Tubers of two russet potato cultivars will be grown and stored up to 8 months using industry standards. After two months in storage, the tubers will be subjected to chemical treatments (including CIPC and zinc emulsions) to determine their impact on sprouting behavior. Various physiological, morphological and biochemical analyses will be performed using tuber tissues collected from treated and untreated tubers.
