Evaluate the Role of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in Plant-Fungal Interactions, Especially Corn-Aspergillus Interaction. 1. Identify volatile organic compounds that may serve as biomarkers for detection of mycotoxin producing fungi in corn and soil. 2. Discovering mitigation strategies that employ volatile organic compounds to reduce mycotoxins accumulation in corn and soil.
Several methods will be used to trap and determine VOCs produced by plant, fungi, or soil communities. VOCs collection will be performed under in vitro, in situ, or in planta conditions in the laboratory, greenhouse, growth chambers, or under field conditions. Two main approaches will be used: 1) head-space collection using the solid phase microextraction (SPME) method and 2) head-space collection using microporous, spherical, ultrapure resin (Haye Sep Q) filters for VOC analysis.
