Research Project: Integrating Advanced Monitoring Techniques to Mitigate Environmental Factors in Storage Systems to Reduce Postharvest Losses

Location: Sugarbeet and Potato Research

Project Number: 3060-21430-009-013-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2022
End Date: Jul 31, 2025

Objective:
Integrate advanced techniques for monitoring and mitigating the environmental factors in storage and investigate their impact on postharvest physiology of potato.

Approach:
Precision postharvest storage systems will be assembled and optimized for monitoring and mitigating the environmental factors to investigate their impact on postharvest physiology of potato. Experiments will be conducted in a multi-institutional research setting, and the cooperator will carry out the following: 1. Provide expertise on advanced measurement techniques, computational fluid dynamics simulations, and AI/ML techniques. 2. Integrate advanced measurement techniques to assemble model storage systems for monitoring the environmental factors in storage (e.g., temperature, humidity, gas/volatile composition). 3. Ensure the experiments are completed in a timely manner for the outlined potato physiology experiments. 4. Contribute preparation of a final report to distribute the results.
