Objective:
1. Test nutritional profiles (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, etc) of new or specialty grains.
2. Test susceptibility of grains or seeds to insect pests in different environments, including stressors with temperature or humidity, for example.
3. Assay functional, chemical, and physical properties of cereal grains of interest.
4. Determine milling capabilities of cereal grains.
5. Understand the factors that may contribute to success of these grains in storage, milling, and production.
Approach:
The USDA researcher and the Cooperator will use various approaches to gather data including: laboratory data collection using behavioral assays; survival and life history data collection; literature reviews and data analysis; laboratory data collection using NIR, milling, shearing, and strength assessments.
