Research Project: Understanding Postharvest Physiology of Potato Using Molecular Methods

Location: Potato, Pulse and Small Grains Quality Research

Project Number: 3060-30600-003-001-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2026
End Date: Jul 31, 2029

Objective:
Main objective of this research is to identify key molecular mechanisms, genes, metabolites regulating critical physiological processes of potato tubers including tuber skin-set, wound healing, dormancy, and determining genetic basis of these physiological processes.

Approach:
Integrated omics approaches will be utilized to discover the underlying genetic, metabolic and physiological mechanisms that significantly impact postharvest physiology of potato tubers. The cooperator will carry out the following: 1) Collect samples during postharvest storage of tuber after various treatments, 2) Process samples for molecular assays, and obtain transcriptome, metabolome, and hormone profiling, 3) Analyze and integrate omics data to identify regulatory genes, metabolites, and pathways associated with critical physiological processes.
