Research Project: Enhancing Potato Resilience To Heat, Drought, and Cold Through Stress Physiology and International Germplasm Collaboration

Location: Vegetable Crops Research

Project Number: 5090-21000-072-006-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 8, 2025
End Date: Sep 7, 2026

Objective:
Get heat, drought and cold stress screening results, elite stocks for breeding, and genetic information to guide future mining of the traits in wild potato species' germplasm in the U.S. Potato Genebank.

Approach:
Use custom propagules and hybrids from the U.S. Potato Genebank challenged with stresses in lab and field, investigate physiological mechanisms, make selections and hybrids for retesting, sample tissue and generate DNA markers to assess genetic mechanisms of the traits.
