Location: Stored Product Insect and Engineering Research
Project Number: 3020-43000-034-036-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Dec 1, 2024
End Date: Nov 30, 2029
Objective:
1. Determine the impact of insect feeding on aquaculture and livestock agroecosystems and develop integrated pest management tactics to reduce/prevent infestations.
2. Combine insect trapping data with game camera data to determine whether wildlife activity or habitats allow stored product insects to overwinter in tallgrass praries.
3. Implement new methods of ecological data analysis that will allow us to predict impact of climate variables (temperature, humidity) on stored product insect populations in different landscapes, including wildlife habitats.
4. Develop collaborative approaches to understand and prevent impacts of climate variation on different agroecosystems, including stored products, horticulture, aquaculture, and native landscapes.
5. Understand factors that contribute to stored product insect populations in foundation seed.
Approach:
The USDA researcher and the Cooperator will use various approaches to gather data including: automated analysis of game camera data; laboratory assays regarding health and safety of animal food and feed; trapping, big data modeling for ecological forecasting; population growth analyses for threshold analysis of animals; models of climate change on population growth.
