Research Project: Prevention of Pathogen Contamination in the Lettuce Production Continuum-Beltsville

Location: Environmental Microbial & Food Safety Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-42610-001-001-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2021
End Date: Sep 14, 2025

Objective:
Objective 1. Investigate potential occurrences of antibiotic resistance and tolerance to hurdles with bacteriophages.

Approach:
We will study the potential persistence and antibiotic resistance of laboratory and environmental bacterial isolates after repeated exposure to hurdles in combination with bacteriophages. Resistant isolates will be characterized to determine if genetic or enviromental determinants drive bacteriophage resistance.
