Research Project: Investigation of Bacteriophage Coverage of Wheat Berries During Tempering to Control Pathogens

Location: Stored Product Insect and Engineering Research

Project Number: 3020-43440-010-001-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 15, 2020
End Date: May 15, 2022

Objective:
To determine the effectiveness of tempering as a method to effectively deliver bacteriophage to the wheat berries.

Approach:
The approach involves using commercial tempering equipment to deliver phage coverage of wheat berries as a method to control pathogens such as E. coli and Salmonella. Dyes will be used to assess berry coverage and the ability to obtain 100% coverage of the external berry surface. Treatments to the tempering water will be used to enhance coverage and assessed.
