Research Project: Enhancing Functional Annotation of Livestock Genomes

Location: Animal Genomics and Improvement Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-31000-112-017-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2019
End Date: Feb 28, 2023

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to design tools to process and analyze sequence data, including characterization of genetic and epigenetic variations and their effects on economically important traits in cattle.

Approach:
Software will be developed and adapted for analyzing 1) genetic and epigenetic variation data being generated by the project sponsored by USDA, including third generation long read sequencing data and 2) association between these markers and animal production and health traits and identification of candidate casual genes. Emphasis should be given to problems related to the bovine genome, although development of tools with wide utility is a priority. Tools will be developed or adapted to reliably identify and characterize these variations across and within breeds or strains of a species.
