Freddi Ahlag Hammerschlag, Fruit Laboratory,Plant Sciences Institute
received an International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) Medal in appreciation for meritorious service to the Society as Chairperson of the ISHS Commission on Biotechnology from 1998-2002 and a second ISHS medal for her service as Chair of the 2002 ISHS Congress Symposium on "Biotechnology in Horticultural Crop Improvement: Achievements, Opportunities and Limitations".

TerezShea-Donohue, Nutrient Requirements and Functions Laboratory,Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center
received an NIH R01 grant for 5 years starting in 2002 to examine "Gastrointestinal nematodes and functional responses to inflammation." She was also appointed as a standing member of the General Medicine A National Institutes of Health Study Section from 2002 to 2006.

John Van de Vaarst, Office of Deputy Area Director,Facilities Management and Operations Division
received for BARC Closing the Circle Award from the White House Task Force on Waste Prevention and Recycling. The award is for an innovative Environmental Management System that holistically combines customary pollution prevention measures with application of research program benefits that are protective of the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

received the 2001 Alumni Achievement Award in Animal Science from Delaware Valley College Alumni Association at the October 2001 Alumni Association Annual Business Meeting held in Doylestown, PA.

David K. Kuykendall, Molecular Plant Pathology Laboratory,Plant Sciences Institute
received the 2001 ARS Technology Transfer Superior Effort Award for the development of a uniquely superior inoculant, the TA-11 NOD+ strain of Brady rhizobium japonicum and its wide adoption by the U.S. farm community. He was co-recipient with William Hunter of the Northern Plains Area, Fort Collins, CO.

received the 2002 NAAB Research Award presented by the National Association of Animal Breeders for outstanding achievements and contributions in the field of animal reproduction and artificial insemination.

Morse B. Solomon, Food Technology and Safety Laboratory,Animal and Natural Resources Institute
received the Distinguished Research Award from the American Meat Science Association for career research excellence in meat science.

David Chitwood, Nematology Laboratory,Plant Sciences Institute
received the Fellow award of the Society of Nematologists.

Gary J. Samuels,, Systematic Botany and Mycology Laboratory,Plant Sciences Institute
received the Mycological Society of America Fellow Award for 2002. This prestigious award is given to an outstanding mid-career mycologist who has contributed significantly to mycology and the Society. Dr. Samuels was honored for his contributions in the systematics of plant pathogenic and biological control fungi especially in determining relationships between sexual and asexual states and his intense collecting in tropical regions. He has also served the Society particularly on the Editorial Board of Mycologia.

The U.S. National Arboretum
was awarded the 2002 Gold Medal Plant Award from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for its flowering crabapple called Adirondack. It is the latest of 16 Gold Medal winners introduced by the 446-acre Arboretum over the years.

was awarded the degree of Doctor honoris causa by the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Joseph Urban, Nutrient Requirements and Functions Laboratory,Animal and Natural Resources Institute
was elected President of the American Association of Veterinary Parasitology for 2003.

BARC Dairy Herd, Animal and Natural Resources Institute
was one of ten dairy herds recognized by the Land O'Lakes Milk Cooperative for sales of "Premium Quality" milk for 12 consecutive months. Premium quality milk is determined by cleanliness tests taken on each milk shipment. Producers receive a bonus of 10, 20, 40, or 50 cents per hundred weight of milk sold if they exceed established milk quality standards. Producers are annually recognized when they exceed these standards for 12 consecutive months. BARC last received the award in 1997.

Thomas E. Devine, Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory,Animal and Natural Resources Institute
was presented a plaque by The Association of Research Directors, Inc., for significant contribution to the development of the Regional Soybean Research Project among the 1890 Land-Grant Universities presented at the Twelfth Biennial Symposium, Washington, D.C., April 2002.

Gary Bauchan, Soybean Genomics and Improvement Laboratory,Plant Sciences Institute
was presented an award for the Outstanding Paper on Plant Genetic Resources at the American Society of Agronomy Meetings in Charlotte, N.C. The title of the paper is "A method for the efficient management and utilization of large germplasm collections" by D.Z. Skinner (USDA-ARS, Pullman, WA), G.R. Bauchan (USDA-ARS, Beltsville, MD) and G. Auricht and S. Hughes (South Australian Research and Development Institute, Adelaide, South Australia). The paper citation is: Crop Science 39(4):1237-1242.

Donald T. Krizek, Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory,Animal and Natural Resources Institute
was presented the Founding Member Award by the NCR-101 Committee on Controlled Environment Technology and Use 1976-2002 in appreciation of his efforts to enlighten a generation of users, scientists and engineers. The award was presented at the 2002 Annual Meeting in Durham, NC., April 2002.

Christopher Pooley, Soybean Genomics and Improvement Laboratory,Plant Sciences Institute
was presented with a plaque for the Best Digital Colorization of a mite for 2001 by the Journal of Acarology at the 25th International Journal of Acarology Meeting in Morgantown, WV, November 2001.

Eric Erbe, Soybean Genomics and Improvement Laboratory,Plant Sciences Institute
was presented with a plaque for the best photograph of a mite for the year 2001 by the Journal of Acarology at the 25th International Journal of Acarology Meeting in Morgantown, WV, November 2001.

Thomas Elias, U. S. National Arboretum
was presented with the Bonsai Clubs International 2001 BCI Writers, Artists and Photographers Award for his outstanding contribution to the promotion of Bonsai. The award was presented by BCI President Solita D. Tafur Rosade.

Kenneth C. Gross, Produce Quality and Safety Laboratory,Plant Sciences Institute
was presented with the Gratitude Plate for his "Outstanding Contributions to the Advancement of RDA-USDA Collaborative Projects on Postharvest Technology". Dr. Moo-Nam Chung, Administrator, Rural Development Administration (RDA) of the Republic of Korea presented this Gratitude Plate to Dr. Gross in Korea, May 2002. Dr. Gross has been an Honorary Scientist of the RDA since 1997.

Hyun Lillehoj, Parasite Biology, Epidemiology, and Systematics Laboratory,Animal and Natural Resources Institute
was presented with the Outstanding Research Award from the Korean Society of Poultry Science in recognition of outstanding research and of great achievement in the fields of immunology, molecular biology and genomics relating to avian coccidiosis, November 2001.

James Saunders, Alternate Crops and Systems Laboratory,Plant Sciences Institute
was recognized with a plaque and certificate from the American Cocoa Research Institute for Outstanding Scientist of the Year in appreciation for his dedication to sustainable cocoa.

Richard A. Anderson, Nutrient Requirements and Functions Laboratory,Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center
was selected as a joint winner of the Best Original Scientific Manuscript Award for the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, for manuscript entitled "A Hydroxychalcone Derived from Cinnamon Functions as a Mimetic for Insulin in 3T3-L1 Adipocytes which appeared in the August, 2001 issue (Vol. 20, #4) of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. Co-authors of the manuscript are Drs. Karalee J. Jarvill-Taylor and Don Graves, Iowa State University. Prize is $500 for each author and $1000 in travel funds to present the work at the Annual Meeting of the Society in San Antonio, TX.

Y Endo, Nematology Laboratory,Plant Sciences Institute
won the 2002 Henry A. Wallace Award given by the College of Agriculture of Iowa State University. This award is given to an Iowa State University graduate who contributes to national or international agriculture in writing, teaching, research or leadership. The award recognizes Dr. Endo's pioneering achievements in utilizing electron microscopy to understand the interactions between plant-parasitic nematodes and their hosts.

Yi Chen, Produce Quality and Safety Laboratory,Plant Sciences Institute
won the following medals at the Maryland Senior Olympics held in October 2001: Long jump (gold), Triple jump (gold), Tennis (silver) and Table tennis (silver).

Susan Thompson, Molecular Plant Pathology Laboratory,Plant Sciences Institute
won the J. Merrill and Adeline Wallace Award from the International Organization of Citrus Virology (IOCV) for promoting citrus virology

Robert Owens, Molecular Plant Pathology Laboratory,Plant Sciences Institute
won the J. Merrill and Adeline Wallace Award from the International Organization of Citrus Virology (IOCV) for promoting citrus virology.

Douglas Miller, Systematic Entomology Laboratory,Plant Sciences Institute
won the L. O. Howard Distinguished Achievement Award from the Eastern Branch Entomological Society of America. The award was presented at their annual meeting in Ocean City, MD, March 2002.
