The completed guide will include these seven major components: Soils, Drainage, Subirrigation, Irrigation, Operation and Management, Environmental Assessment and Impact, and Economics. The overall focus of the guide is to help users design and implement water management strategies and technologies to meet existing and future environmental and agricultural production goals. A major component of the Guide is the assessment of Ohio soils to produce water management specifications and guidance based upon potential response to the proposed water management strategy, not the typical drainage groups approach. All of the state's typical soil series are being assessed using the updated USDA-NCRS-SOILS-5 database and the ellipse equation to develop depth and spacing recommendations and evaluate water table conditions. Over 40 of these soils (benchmark soils) also are being evaluated using DRAINMOD with the soils database and long-term climatic record. This paper focuses on the development and structure of the working group, and summarizes the new Ohio soils drainage specifications and recommendations, the new conventional drainage design specifications and recommendations, and the approach being taken to develop the soil irrigation specifications. |
