Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Milky disease, caused by the bacterium Bacillus popilliae, attacks numerous scarab larvae feeding on sugarcane in central Florida. Simple field observations of milky appearing grubs indicate only a proportion of the total infected grubs. Prevalence of a milky larvae, the most commonly used parameter in epizootiology, underestimates the total mortality which B. popilliae causes to Cyclocephala parallela. This is especially true in the warm climate where sugarcane grows since insect diseases develop very rapidly and diseased insects die faster.
