Interpretive Summary: Seed producers, white corn millers, and farmers need agronomic performance data to select white seeded corn hybrids adapted for growing in specific regions in the United States. The national performance tests of white hybrids included germplasm in late and early maturity groups and was planted at 15 and 13 locations, respectively. Smaller seed companies benefitted by having their products tested in a much wider area than could be accomplished by the company itself. In 1997, the late maturity test compared 39 white hybrids submitted by 13 commercial seed producers and the early test included 44 white hybrids from 14 commercial seed producers. Significant performance differences were found among the entries in both tests for yield and all agronomic traits measured. First and second generation European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner) data were observed at Columbia and Grand Pass, MO. Kernel quality evaluation was done by the Illinois Crop Improvement Association. These included the quality traits of test weight, kernel weight, kernel size, thins, density, and percentage horny endosperm. A report was published and distributed to the participating state experiment stations, seedsmen, and corn millers and processors.

Technical Abstract: Seed producers, white corn millers, and farmers need agronomic performance data to select white seeded corn hybrids adapted for growing in specific regions in the United States. The 1997 Late White Food Corn Performance Test included 39 white hybrids, one white hybrid check, and three yellow hybrid checks submitted by 13 commercial seed producers. Fourteen white hybrids were new to the test in 1997. Fifteen locations were planted in the agronomic evaluation. Two white hybrids and two yellow check hybrids yielded significantly more than the mean for all entries (147.0 bu/a): the yellow check Pioneer Brand 3245 (170.4 bu/a), Pioneer Brand 32H39 (168.9 bu/a), the yellow check Pioneer Brand 3394 (167.8 bu/a), and Pioneer Brand X1156MW (163.1 bu/a). Hybrids that did not differ significantly from the top-yielding hybrid in the test included Zimmerman Z62W (158.1 bu/a), IFSI 95-1 (157.4 bu/a), and IFSI 90-1 (157.1 bu/a). The 1997 Early White Food Corn Performance Test included 44 white hybrids and two yellow hybrid checks. Entries were submitted by 14 commercial seed producers. Fourteen white hybrids were new to the test in 1997. Thirteen total locations were planted in the agronomic evaluation. The average yield from nine northern Corn Belt locations was 136.2 bu/a. Three white hybrids and one yellow check yielded significantly more than the average entry: the yellow check Pioneer Brand 3394 (160.7 bu/a), Pioneer Brand 32H39 (159.6 bu/a), Pioneer Brand X1156MW (156.5 bu/a), and Asgrow XP7767W (153.6 bu/a). Two other white hybrids could not be statistically differentiated (yielded 146.7 bu/a or more) from the top yielding hybrid: Wilson E1744 (147.0 bu/a) and Diener DB 114W (146.9 bu/a).
