Seed producers, corn millers, and farmers need agronomic performance data to select white food-grade corn hybrids adapted for growing in specific regions of the United States. The national performance tests of white food-grade hybrids include germplasm classified into late and early maturity groups. Late maturity white food-grade corn performance and grain quality testing has been conducted from 1977 to the present. During 21 years (including 1997) of testing late maturity germplasm, 664 hybrids from public and private sources have been evaluated. Hybrids have been submitted for evaluation by two universities and 51 private companies. For 1997, 14 of 43 entries are new to the test. Early maturity, white food-grade performance and grain quality (quality data reported beginning in 1988) testing have been done since 1984. During 14 years of testing, 345 hybrids from public and private sources have been evaluated. Hybrids have been submitted for evaluation by three universities and 42 private companies. For 1997, 14 of 46 entries are new to the test. Data on European corn borer tolerance are obtained for all tests and data on virus tolerance are obtained for the late maturity performance test. Grain quality data that are common across tests include test weight, kernel weight, kernel density, and pericarp removal. Testing is supported by the American Corn Miller's Federation, The Quaker Oats Company, and participating seed companies.
