Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This book chapter discusses the differences that are observed within cereal genomes and their complexity. There is a large amount of information available about genome evolution in cereals, which the chapter tries to place in perspective. However, no single perspective appears to be optimal in giving a clear picture of the evolution of a cereal genome. We attempted to examine various studies that tried to answer specific questions concerning genome evolution, unfortunately, they produced different answers because they utilize different techniques, which analyze different aspects of the genome. Discrepancies between different analyses did not warrant the acceptance of one genome analysis over another, but rather, we tried to offer new insights into the evolutionary processes involved. Because such differences had been observed, it is clear that different parts of a genome evolve at different rates, theories of genome evolution will require integration of different approaches in order to fully understand the variation in evolutionary rates that have occurred.
