Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) has 12 chromosomes (2n = 24) with a genome size of 8.6 x 108 base pairs. To create a genetic map, 12 muskmelon varieties of diverse origin were surveyed by RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) analysis. PAUP (Phylogenetic Analysis Using Parsimony) analysis of the data revealed considerable dissimilarity between MR-1 (a selection from India with multiple disease resistance) and Ananas Yokneam (AY, an Israeli landrace susceptible to many diseases). Both varieties were used to develop backcross populations for genetic mapping. Currently, 30 primers that produce polymorphic bands only in MR-1 and F1 have been identified out of 300 screened and some of them have been mapped. More primers are being screened and AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) is being developed to identify additional polymorphisms.
