Interpretive Summary: The goal of this project is to sequence, assemble, and annotate the genome of Cochliomyia macellaria, commonly known as the secondary screwworm fly. C. macellaria is a saprophagous blow fly with broad distribution in the Americas where it is used in forensic entomology to determine post-mortem interval (PMI). It is closely related to the New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax, thus the C. macellaria genome could provide valuable insights into the evolution of parasitism.
