Technical Abstract: The United States plays a leadership role in the global beekeeping and honey industries. This article summarizes the roles of honey bees in agriculture and the key challenges facing the US beekeeping industry as well as innovative solutions to existing problems. The article also provides a review on how the US federal government and beekeeping industry prepared for and responded to emerging and pandemic diseases such as Honey Bee Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). The important lessons learned from the US experience in dealing with challenging situations will have a meaningful impact upon our preparedness to unknown threats in the future. The unique information included in this article may be of use for researchers and graduate students who are interested in the US beekeeping industry.
