Technical Abstract: The translation of basic research discoveries in plant biology into significant improvements in the crops that feed, clothe, and shelter us is a fundamental solution to challenges brought on by population growth, access to sustenance, and climate change. The challenges related to crops are defined by the local cultures, environments, and resources available. My research focus is on changing the composition of soybean seeds to better meet the nutritional and functional requirements of soybean oil and high protein meal destined as a part of livestock feed formulations. The research involves developing a better understanding of the soybean genome and the genes responsible for seed quality traits. We are developing soybeans that produce an oil with qualities similar to olive oil and also soybeans that produce more metabolizable energy at the expense of anti-nutritional carbohydrates. These valuable seed composition traits must be transferred into elite soybean lines that will provide the agronomic qualities and yield that producers require to enable broad adoption and the potential for changing the commodity soybean into several new enhanced functional soybeans that can better meet the nourishment needs of the population.
