Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Flame resistant materials play an important role in the manufacture of clothes and household items such as curtains, carpets, bedding etc. However, natural fabrics such as cotton have low flame resistance, therefore requiring specialized chemical treatments to enhance their flame resistant properties. Recent research has focused on the development of non-halogenated flame retardant molecules to treat flammable natural fabrics. We recently designed a non-halogenated organophosphorus flame retardant from the commercially available 1,3,5-triacryloylhexahydro-1,3,5-triazine. The compound contains two Michael acceptors that can potentially react with hydroxyl groups of cellulose in the presence of both acid and base during finishing process. The compound can also polymerize under ultraviolet light (UV) or ultrasound-initiated free radical reaction conditions to increase the percent add-on of a flame retardant onto cotton fabrics. In this poster, we discuss the synthesis and characterization of the novel flame retardant and its non-flammable property on cotton fabrics.
