Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Similarities in the aridity of environments and water scarcity for irrigation allow common approaches to irrigation management problems and research methods in the Southern Great Plains of the United States and the Middle East. Measurement methods involving weighing lysimeters and eddy covariance systems for crop water use determination, are used in both regions and were compared. Eddy covariance systems consistently under estimated crop water use in both regions, probably due to the mixture of irrigated and fallow fields, and adjacent non-irrigated areas. Crop coefficients in the arid Jordan Valley were determined to be less than those suggested by the widely accepted FAO 56 publication on crop water use, possible due to crop cover and environment differences between the valley, and the regions in Europe and the United States from which came the preponderence of data going into FAO 56. Examples of research projects are provided and publications resulting from joint research under the Middle East Regional Irrigation Management Information Systems project are presented. (MERIMIS -
