Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Flame retardancy of textiles is an important property in apparel, bedding, curtains, and other household items. Chemical treatment is one method to increase flame retardancy of textile such as cotton, linenes, and silks. Halogenated compounds (containing chlorine or bromine atoms) have been shown to be good flame retardants, however, non-halogenated chemical finishing is more environmentally desireble. Previous research shows phosphorus containing flame retardants can be as effective as halogenated flame retardants especially when they contain nitrogen atoms. In this presentation, we present the synthesis of new flame retardant nitrogen-containing organophosphorus compounds and the results of flammability tests for the treated cotton textile. The organophosphorus compounds also have the potential to be cross-linked to the textiles.
