Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In this poster presentation, we will discuss the synthesis and structural characterizations of nitro-benzyl cellulose (1), amino-benzyl cellulose (2) and pentafluoro –benzyl cellulose (3). All cellulose derivatives are synthesized by etherification process in lithium chloride/N,N-dimethylacetamide homogeneous solution. Nitrobenzylation was effected in 80% yield by treating a mixture of microcrystalline cellulose (20µm), 4-dimethyl aminopyridine (DMAP) and 4-nitobenzyl chloride (4eq.) at 80 ºC for overnight. Nitro-benzyl cellulose (1) was then reduced to amino-benzyl cellulose (2) in 93% yield with indium metal in ethanol and saturated aqueous ammonium chloride. Also, the pentafluoro-benzyl cellulose (3) was obtained by same manner. In addition to the syntheses of the desired products their structural characterizations by FT-IR, CP/MAS 13C NMR, DSC, TGA, and MALDI-TOF methods will be shown.
