Registration of goldhull low phytic acid (glpa) germplasm of rice. Crop Science. 44:1497-1498. Interpretive Summary: This paper reports the development of a goldhull color, low phytic acid germplasm of rice. Normal levels of phytic acid provide a poorly digested form of phosphorus, and interferes with iron and calcium uptake. This low phytic acid rice is expected to have improved nutritional value for humans and other monogastric animals. The goldhull color assures that this specialty rice can be visually identified in the farm field, in the farm truck, and at the elevator. Technical Abstract: A cross between a low phytic mutant with strawhull color and a goldhull cultivar with normal phytic acid was made in order to recombine low phytic acid and goldhull color. Low phytic acid rice is considered nutritionally desirable, but the original low phytic acid mutant was phenotypically indistinguishable from standard rice, leading to problems in maintaining seed purity. The goldhull-low phytic acid recombinant provides germplasm that can be visually identified in the farm field, in the farm truck, and at the elevator. |
