Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: During 2001 and 2002, various projects were conducted to study the biology of certain subterranean insect pests of ornamental nurseries and to develop tactics for their management. This report contains a summary of these projects. The black vine weevil (BVW) and exotic scarab grub complex were the primary targets of this research. These projects included development of a monitoring program for BVW in field-grown Taxus (yews); testing reduced-risk insecticides and biological control by nematodes; development of spray program against adult BVW; testing subsurface application of insecticides as rescue treatments against European chafer; studying the life history of oriental beetle (OB) and other members of the scarab grub complex; and biological control of OB and Japanese beetle.
