Citation: Torbert III, H.A., Potter, K.N. 2004. Fertility management effects on runoff losses of phosphorus. In: Hall, W.L., Robarge, W.P., editors. Environmental Impact of Fertilizer Products on Soil, Air, & Water. Washington, D.C: American Chemical Society. p. 220-234.

Interpretive Summary: Many factors affect nutrient losses from agriculture. Management practices on farms can be important in controlling these losses. This chapter discusses the effect of fertility management on runoff losses of phosphorus. Subjects discussed include the effect of fertilizer application methods and the use of animal manure on farms. Fertilizer management in conservation tillage systems is also discussed, along with the potential to use soil test P as a predictor for runoff loss of phosphorus.

Technical Abstract: Factors affecting non-point loss of nutrients from agricultural soils are numerous and complex. Many of the factors that affect nutrient losses can be greatly impacted by agricultural management practices. This chapter discusses the effect of fertility management on runoff losses of phosphorus. Subjects discussed include the effect of fertilizer application methods and the use of organic fertilizers and animal manure. Fertilizer management in conservation tillage systems and its affect on phosphorus losses, especially as affected by soil moisture conditions, is also included. A discussion on the potential to use soil test P as a predictor for runoff loss of phosphorus is also included.
