Interpretive Summary: This book chapter, in Kluwer's Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables and Their Management, overviews the symptoms, causal agent, disease cycle and management strategies of fungal, bacterial and viral diseases of bell pepper. Many of these diseases can affect tomato and other solanaceous crops across temperate, subtropical and tropical regions of the world. This chapter brings together relevant facts about pepper diseases for pepper growers, extension agents, crop consultants and other members of the vegetable production and plant pathology communities fulfilling an important part of the ARS mission.

Technical Abstract: Pepper is an important crop of temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. It is subject to diseases caused by a wide variety of fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens. Frequently, these pathogens also infect tomato and other solanaceous crops necessitating wise pepper disease management as one component of an overall vegetable disease management plan.
