Technical Abstract: A review of the biology, ecology and control is given for the horn fly, Haematobia irritans (L.) and the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), both of which constitute a major nuisance for livestock, particularly cattle, in the U.S. and many parts of the world. Both sexes of both flies are vicious blood feeders, and can reduce weight gains and milk production, and in some einstances transmit diseases. The purpose of the paper is to give interested parties more information about these pests and to provide suggestions for environmentally sound management techniques that can be incorporated into integrated pest management programs.
