Citation: Interpretive Summary: 'Fallon' yellow dry pea was developed and released based on its semi- leafless architecture combined with short internodes which imparts excellent standing ability. The improved standing ability of Fallon is an advantage for producers of the crop by improving harvesting ease and reducing losses that often occur with fallen vines. Fallon also has the advantage of resistance to powdery mildew a disease that is known to reduce yields and quality. The absence of mildew on the plants also eliminates the problem with the spores that cause allergic reactions to people and can cause combine fires. Fallon has good seed quality. The variety will likely be used whole or for splitting. The large seed size of Fallon is desired by markets in the U.S. and internationally.
Technical Abstract: 'Fallon' is a large-seeded yellow-cotyledon dry pea (Pisum sativum L.) developed by the USDA-ARS in cooperation with the Washington Agricultural Research Center (Pullman, WA); and the Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station (Moscow, ID) and released in 1997. Fallon was released based on its' large seed size, resistance to powdery mildew caused by Erysiphe polygoni DC and semi-leafless upright growth habit. Fallon (PS210387) originated as an F6 selection from a cross (PS210713/'Flavanda'-af) made in 1987. PS210713 is a selection from the breeding program and was used as a source of resistance to powdery mildew and race 1 of fusarium wilt [caused by Fusarium oxysporum Schlechtend.:Fr. f. sp. pisi (van Hall) W.C. Snyder & H.N. Hans]. Flavanda-af was used for its large seed size and dwarf semi- leafless plant growth habit. Single plant selections from the F6 bulk population and evaluated in subsequent years at several locations. Fallon has a dwarf growth habit and is indeterminate and generally non-branching. The stipules are large and medium green. Flowers are white and appear on the 15th node and are borne on the peduncles in doubles. Pods are straight and blunt ended and contain 6-7 seeds. Seeds weigh an average 25.1 grams per 100 seeds compared to 17.6 grams for Latah. Water uptake and cooking time is comparable to that of Latah and color is good after cooking. .
