Technical Abstract: Cotton is the world's most important textile fiber and the second most important oil seed crop. It is one of the premier industrial crops in the U.S. and many developing countries. Currently the cotton industry faces many challenges including competition from synthetic fibers, need for pest and disease resistant varieties, lack of genetic diversity within improved germplasm, and innovations in textile technologies that require higher quality fibers. Since the cotton monograph published in 1984 there has not been a book published that covers the new technologies useful in field and laboratory research for cotton improvement. This is a book of 15 chapters written by an international group of authors including scientists from China, Australia, Bulgaria, France, and the United States. The book covers a wide range of topics including chapters on variety development, mathematical models for analysis for quantitative traits, diversity and use of diverse germplasm, genomic research, transgenic insect resistance, stress tolerance, DNA technologies, expression of specific genes in cotton, tissue culture techniques, and new transformation technologies. Internationally recognized peers in the specific areas of research wrote each chapter. We believe the book will complement other books on cotton and will be an excellent book for scientists, graduate students, extension workers, and producers.
