Although models do have methods to estimate parameters based on such easily measured characteristics as soil texture, vegetation type and cover, or topography, it is always better to use data to aid in parameterization. Because of the ehigh cost of monitoring runoff and erosion, rainfall simulators are used t obtain parameters for models used in predicting the effects of management on runoff and erosion. This chapter describes the process using a watershed scale model, SWAT, applied to two locations in Mexico. Technical Abstract: Increasingly, rainfall simulator data are being used to parameterize natural resource simulation models, particularly those which compute runoff and erosion. The value of using simulator data is that the conditions are controlled, large amounts of data can be collected within a short time, and the experiment is relatively inexpensive. This chapter uses the SWAT model as an example of parameterizing a model using rainfall simulator data. Dat from two sites in northern Mexico are used to illustrate the parameterization of the Curve Number and Universal Soil Loss Equation used in the SWAT model. |
