Interpretive Summary: This chapter describes the different types of rainfall simulators and their characteristics that have been used in runoff and erosion experiments. Important features of simulators including how well they duplicate natural energy are detailed. In addition, the types of treatments which duplicate different crops and management systems are described. Finally, the types of measurements including the application rate, runoff amounts, and ground and vegetation cover is described.

Technical Abstract: Rainfall simulation has been used to quantify the hydrologic process relative to soil, vegetation, and management characteristics. The resulting information is fundamental in data collection programs, simulation modeling and the management of natural resources. The type of simulator used, the experimental design, and the type of data collected will be a function of the intended application of the results. This chapter presents an overview of simulator designs, their characteristics in relation to drop size distribution, intensity, and energy, types of treatments applied to experimental plots, type of measurements including runoff, rainfall, soil moisture, and canopy and ground cover.
