Interpretive Summary: Solar cookers come in many different shapes and sizes. It is difficult to estimate their performance based on appearance or literature supplied by the manufacturer. Research results are difficult to compare because different things are being measured in each paper. The international standard for testing solar cookers sets limits for wind, temperature and cloud conditions during a test. It specifies test procedures and calls for the performance to be reported in terms of cooking power (in Watts). Following this test standard makes it easier to compare solar cookers. Cooking power is normalized for solar radiation and air temperature. Tests done in different places and at different times will yield the same results for the same cooker. Scientists and manufacturers benefit if standards are used. They can see if the changes they are making in design or materials are making the solar cooker work better. Consumers also benefit. They can compare different solar cookers made by different companies and select one that is the right size and price for their family.
Technical Abstract: The international standard procedure for testing solar cookers and reporting performance sets limits for environmental conditions, specifies test procedures, and calls for performance to be reported in terms of cooking power (W). This test standard makes it possible to compare solar cookers based on performance. Researchers, manufacturers and consumers all benefit if standards are used. This paper explains the reason for having a test standard, presents the standard, and demonstrates its use.
