Research Project: In-Field Row Crop Yield Prediction and Mapping

Location: Genetics and Sustainable Agriculture Research

Project Number: 6064-21600-001-019-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2026
End Date: Jul 31, 2028

Objective:
Objective 1: Integrate geospatial features of the multisoure remote sensing scheme into the developed allometric crop yield function Objective 2: Develop with the geospatial featured functional model for a complete tool for in-field row crop yield prediction and mapping

Approach:
Existing crop yield and mapping data are more at regional scale, and it is difficult to predict and map yield at field scale for synthesis of plant allometric mode. The developed in-field allometric crop yield prediction function lacks geospatial information. This project will enhance the potential of the current allometric crop prediction and mapping by providing in-situ and geotag capabilities to the function to create a in-field tool. The incorporation of geospatial data in crop prediction and mapping will extend crop management efforts from regional analysis to in-field mapping for high precision management, as well as expand the technology from standalone and Internet web-based systems to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Given the fact that crop yield remains a problem especially at farm and field scales, the technology would revolutionize the way to predict and map allometric crop yields for high precision site-specific crop field management.
