Objective:
The objective of this agreement is to collaboratively leverage the capabilities of the Cooperator and ARS toward the mutual research goal of controlling antimicrobial resistant (AMR) Salmonella that plague the swine industry. The Cooperator brings unique talents in the chemical synthesis of novel swine feed ingredients having both antibacterial and nutritional properties. ARS is positioned to collaborate with the Cooperator by providing access to BSL-2 facilties for assessing efficacy of Cooperator's novel feed ingredients against AMR Salmonella pathogens (isolated and characterized by ARS) derived from swine and/or pork products intended for human consumption.
Approach:
Working collaboratively, the Cooperator and ARS have the necessary expertise and facilities to execute research of mutual benefit to both organizations; this research cannot be achieved by either organization working alone. Cooperator will synthesize novel, generally recognized As Safe (GRAS) swine feed ingredients for efficacy testing against AMR bacterial pathogens. Cooperator will provide feed ingredients and will interact with ARS scientists in both in vitro and in vivo testing of the ingredients. Cooperator will also work collaboratively with external university researchers with capability to assess nutritional quality of feed ingredients in weanling swine (including ultimate quality of pork products destined for human consumption). ARS scientists will review and provide input to the research designs of studies conducted by Cooperator and any external research personnel.
