Research Project: Dry Bean Harvest On-Site Sensors for Seed and Nutritional Quality

Location: Sugarbeet and Bean Research

Project Number: 5050-21430-012-024-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 3, 2026
End Date: Jun 2, 2028

Objective:
To outfit research combined with near infrared sensors to allow seed spectral data collecting during dry bean harvest and to calibrate system for use in predicting end use quality seed attributes.

Approach:
A near-infrared (NIR) sensor will be added to our dry bean plot combine. A system encompassing the mechanics and electronics will be developed within the combine for the NIR spectral data to be collected at the research field-plot level in dry beans seeds during harvest. The system will be tested and optimized for use to predict protein data.
