Objective:
To develop automated near infrared spectroscopy prediction tools for evaluation of dry bean protein, seed coat quality, and canning quality at harvest.
Approach:
Dry bean breeding nurseries of cooperator and ARS East Lansing will be evaluated for seed protein content, seed quality at harvest, cooking time, and canning quality using standard published methods for each. Near Infrared spectroscopy measurements will be taken using equipment within the plot combine. Prediction models will be developed for each parameter. Once the models are validated they will be used as a germplasm quality screening tool.
