Research Project: Controlling Citrus Huanglongbing by Using the Citrus Isolate of Nectarine Marafivirus M and Its Expression System

Location: Subtropical Plant Pathology Research

Project Number: 6034-22000-045-030-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 19, 2025
End Date: Nov 30, 2027

Objective:
Objective 5: Conducting extension and outreach activities to inform stakeholders of project results and obtaining permits for commercialization.

Approach:
We will request an in-person investigatory meeting with the EPA and FDA. Along with a letter of request, we will provide an outline of our research, objectives, relevant data marked “confidential” and the proposed method(s) of application or use of the NMV-M/CFL for the agency’s review. The EPA would be involved if it decides that the proposed use constitutes a “pesticidal use” of the virus. If the EPA decides otherwise, we may be instructed to work with APHIS-PPQ to have the virus regulated as a biological control agent or treatment. In this case, we will request a meeting with APHIS-PPQ and follow through with its instructions.
