Research Project: Controlling Citrus Huanglongbing by Using the Citrus Isolate of Nectarine Marafivirus M and Its Expression System

Location: Subtropical Plant Pathology Research

Project Number: 6034-22000-045-029-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 21, 2025
End Date: Nov 30, 2027

Objective:
Objective 1: Characterizing the NMV-M/CFL (NMV) citrus isolate, including its host range and transmission. Objective 5: Conducting extension and outreach activities to inform stakeholders of project results and obtaining permits for commercialization.

Approach:
1). Sampling of field sites with citrus germplasm collections in TX, as well as representative orchards within each growing region will be performed to assess NMV-M presence. The optimized RT-qPCR detection method will be used for testing NMV-M. 2). To engage growers and stakeholders, we will organize meetings in each state to directly inform them of project results and incorporate visits to field trials and greenhouse experiments. A group of interested stakeholders from each state will be engaged to form a panel to discuss and evaluate project results and gather growers’ opinions and perceptions on NMV-M/CFL potential. The stakeholder panel will meet at least once per year, following meetings that focus on sharing research progress and activities.
