Research Project: Assessing Water Storage Dynamics and Forest Phenology in a Source-Waters Subalpine Area

Location: Water Management and Systems Research

Project Number: 3012-13660-010-035-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 3, 2025
End Date: Mar 2, 2028

Objective:
Assess the seasonality and diurnal dynamics of tree water storage in a source-waters subalpine forest and watershed.

Approach:
We have installed instrumentation to monitor continuous water use and stem water storage in the two dominant tree species at the Niwot Ridge LTER/AmeriFlux site. This instrumentation includes stem sapflow, moisture content sensors, and dendrometers. These continuous data will be supplemented with in situ measurements of canopy photosynthesis, leaf water potential, and point measurements of stem capacitance over the next three summers to capture the impacts of interannual climate variability.
