Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research
Project Number: 6060-13000-029-023-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement
Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Sep 30, 2024
Objective:
To provide expertise and support on soil erosion-resistance data for the development of BSTEM bank erosion simulations for the Lower American River Site 4a by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District (USACE). Specific objectives are:
1. Collect samples on the Lower American River, CA, for soil erosion resistance testing using JET and EFA techniques.
2. Compare the results of different techniques (JET and EFA) used to quantify soil erosion resistance parameters.
3. Provide technical support to USACE during the development and operation of simulations with the USDA BSTEM model.
Approach:
Members of the USDA, ARS BSTEM development team (TEAM), will collect new data on soil erosion resistance using JET technology to quantify its variability for use in risk-based analysis of bank and levee erosion. Soil samples will also be provided to USACE Engineering and Research Development Center for soil erosion resistance testing using the EFA technique. The TEAM will provide technical expertise, review, and quality control on the final soil erosion-resistance data obtained by JET and EFA techniques for the development of BSTEM bank erosion simulations for the Lower American River conducted by USACE. These data will further be compared to previously measured Jet Erosion Test data collected by ARS, USACE, and Texas A&M University.
