Objective:
Understand odorous compounds and leachate generated by staged swine carcasses exposed to different management strategies. Phase 1a: Systematically evaluate different staging piles for management strategies on odor and leachate to determine most promising method to scale up. Phase 1b: Evaluate ambient environment effects including weather, insects, scavengers on larger staging piles. Phase 2: Incorporate real-world scale staging pile construction and management.

Approach:
Phase 1a: Emissions Comparisons: Developed volatile organic compound (VOC) profiles using thermal desorption tubes analyzed by gas chromatography (GC)/mass spectrometry (MS). Swine carcass material (7-10 kg) will be placed in test chambers of various treatments and monitored over three month period. Treatments with the lowest VOC profiles will move onto Phase 1b. Phase 1b: Top 2-3 treatments will be scaled up with larger swine carcasses (75-100 kg material). Larger carcass piles VOC profiles will be monitored with wind tunnels. Air samples will be monitored at the inlet and outlet of the wind tunnel. The wind tunnel will be equipped with internal fans that allow the air velocity to vary from 0 to 4 m s-1. The tunnels are equipped with wire anemometers, which allows for the calculation of air volume passing through the tunnel. VOC profiles will be monitored over three-month period. Phase 2: Top treatments will be scaled up again with larger swine carcasses (> 100 kg material) and monitored with cameras.
