Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research
Project Number: 6060-13000-029-019-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 1, 2021
End Date: Aug 31, 2026
The overall objective is to develop procedures to process and analyze data of flow and bed geomorphology measured using acoustic technologies (acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) and multibeam echosounder (MBES)). Specific objectives are: 1) Characterize channel flow and bathymetry of streams in the Mississippi Delta; 2) Develop a processing tool chain for data measured by ADCP and MBES; and 3) Advice and provide training to ARS Staff on use of processing and analysis tools.
Specific tasks are: 1) Conduct QA/QC on select reaches of meandering streams in the MS Delta using observed river flow and bathymetry collected by ARS; 2) Determine set of tools that can most effectively process and analyze ADCP and MBES data sets of MS Delta streams; 3) Apply U.S. Army Corps of Engineers technology (ISSDOTv2) to calculate sediment transport rates from repeat scans of river bathymetry; 4) Analyze ADCP and MBES backscatter and amplitude data and establish relationships with measured grain size of suspended sediment and bed material; and 5) Assist, if necessary, with the data collection effort.
