Research Project: Improved Understanding of Integrated Gully and Watershed Erosion Processes in Agricultural Watersheds

Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research

Project Number: 6060-13000-029-007-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2018
End Date: Aug 31, 2023

Objective:
Conduct laboratory, field and modeling studies to quantify erosion processes in agricultural watersheds for development of improved erosion control practices and assessments.

Approach:
This research will perform studies to evaluate runoff and landscape properties, such as topographic profiles, soil properties, and management practices in watershed areas susceptible to sheet and rill, ephemeral gully and edge-of-field gully erosion formation. Field monitoring activities will be performed in conjunction with laboratory measurements to characterize and quantify gully migration, gully growth, and sediment yield in the study sites. Improved algorithms describing sheet and rill, and gully erosion processes will be formulated for use in models for extrapolation to different watershed and management conditions. Modeling studies will be performed over a range of field and watershed scales using enhancements developed using the RUSLE2 and AnnAGNPS models.
