Research Project: Development of Medium-Density SNP Panel to Aid Genomic Prediction in Louisiana Sugarcane Variety Development

Location: Sugarcane Research

Project Number: 6052-21000-018-014-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 1, 2024
End Date: Nov 30, 2028

Objective:
To develop a medium-density SNP panel to aid in genomic prediction in the early stages of Louisiana sugarcane variety development to increase the efficiency of development, selection and release of commercial sugarcane varieties.

Approach:
SNP markers to be used for genomic prediction have been identified by the Cooperator and ARS scientists through previous studies. Primers for a panel consisting of a set of SNP markers (~3,500) will be synthesized at a commercial facility. Representative sugarcane clones within the Louisiana sugarcane breeding program will be identified by the ARS partners for isolation of DNA by the Cooperator, which will be used for validation of the SNP panel. The Cooperator, in consultation with the ARS partners, will customize the SNP panel for running DNA samples from the breeding program every year either in-house or on a pay-per-sample basis at a commercial facility.
